From Laughter to Lion Sightings: My Unforgettable Girls’ Safari in Amboseli
There are trips you enjoy, and then there are trips that quietly change the way you see the world.
For me, that trip began with a simple message in our group chat.
“Girls, are we finally doing this safari or are we going to keep talking about it?”
Within a week, four of us had booked our escape to Amboseli National Park. We wanted a break from work, endless emails, traffic, and the constant rush of everyday life. We didn’t know then that we were about to create memories we’d still be laughing about years later.
Our home for the next few days would be Sentrim Amboseli, nestled just outside Amboseli National Park with the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro standing proudly in the background.

The Road to Amboseli
We left Nairobi before dawn, armed with playlists, snacks, coffee, and far more excitement than sleep.
The city slowly disappeared behind us, replaced by open landscapes, small towns, and stretches of countryside that seemed to go on forever.
Somewhere along the journey, conversations shifted from work deadlines to childhood memories. We laughed until our stomachs hurt, stopped for photos at every scenic viewpoint, and debated which animal we’d see first.
“Definitely elephants,” one friend declared.
“No,” another argued. “It’s going to be giraffes.”
None of us guessed correctly.
First Impressions
By the time we arrived at Sentrim Amboseli, the afternoon sun had softened into a warm golden glow.
The staff welcomed us with genuine smiles, refreshing drinks, and the kind of hospitality that instantly makes you feel at home.
Our rooms overlooked the surrounding bush, and as we walked to unpack, we paused every few steps simply to admire the view.
And then there it was.
Mount Kilimanjaro.
Even though its summit hid shyly behind clouds, its presence dominated the horizon.
No photograph had prepared us for how enormous and beautiful it looked in real life.
“This alone was worth the drive,” someone whispered.
I silently agreed.

The Safari Begins
The following morning, my phone buzzed at 5:30 a.m.
Normally, I would have pressed snooze without hesitation.
But this wasn’t a normal morning.
Outside, the world was still dark.
The cool Amboseli air carried sounds I’d never heard before—birds calling to one another, distant rustling in the bushes, and a silence that somehow felt alive.
By six o’clock we were wrapped in jackets, coffee cups in hand, climbing into the safari vehicle.
Our guide smiled knowingly.
“The animals are waiting,” he said.
Sunrise on the Savannah
Watching the sunrise in Amboseli is something I struggle to describe.
The sky slowly transformed from deep navy blue into soft pink, then brilliant orange.
The golden light spread across the plains until every blade of grass seemed to glow.
Then, almost as if someone had planned it perfectly, a family of elephants appeared.
Not one or two.
Dozens.
Young calves walked between their mothers while older bulls marched confidently across the open plains.
Behind them stood Mount Kilimanjaro.
Clouds had finally lifted, revealing its snow-capped peak.
Nobody spoke.
Sometimes the most beautiful moments don’t need commentary.
We simply watched.
Every Corner Held a Surprise
As the morning continued, Amboseli revealed itself little by little.
A giraffe stretched gracefully toward the branches of an acacia tree.
A herd of zebras crossed directly in front of our vehicle.
Hundreds of wildebeest grazed peacefully in the distance.
Flamingos painted parts of the marshes with delicate shades of pink.
Then our guide suddenly slowed down.
“Lion.”
At first, all I could see was grass.
Then I noticed movement.
A lioness lay almost perfectly camouflaged beneath a shrub while two cubs wrestled nearby.
I couldn’t believe how close we were.
There were no fences.
No barriers.
Only respect.
We were visitors in their world.
Breakfast with a View
After hours of exploring, we stopped at a designated picnic site.
Breakfast somehow tasted better surrounded by nature.
Perhaps it was the fresh air.
Perhaps it was the excitement.
Or perhaps everything simply tastes better after watching elephants at sunrise.
As we ate, we replayed every sighting.
Each of us insisted we had captured the best photo.
None of us could agree.
Back at Sentrim Amboseli
Returning to the lodge felt like coming home.
The swimming pool looked incredibly inviting after a dusty morning game drive.
Some of us swam.

Others stretched out beside the pool with fresh juice in hand.
From the viewing areas, we continued spotting wildlife wandering through the surrounding landscape.
It was strange how quickly the bush slowed us down.
Nobody checked emails.
Nobody talked about work.
For once, our phones existed mainly for taking photographs.
Stories Around the Table
That evening, dinner became another highlight.
As we sampled delicious local and international dishes, conversations drifted from wildlife to travel dreams.
We met couples celebrating anniversaries, photographers chasing the perfect elephant portrait, and families introducing their children to Africa’s wildlife for the very first time.
Every table had its own safari story.
Every story sounded different.
Golden Hour
Our afternoon game drive turned out to be my favourite.
The harsh midday light had softened into rich golden colours.
Dust floated gently behind the vehicle.
The entire landscape seemed to glow.
A lone elephant bull stood quietly against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro.
Nearby, impalas darted through the grass while crowned cranes wandered gracefully through the wetlands.
Then we spotted a family of hyenas.
Not the villains documentaries often make them out to be.
Just parents caring for curious young cubs.
Nature has a way of challenging assumptions.
A Sky Full of Stars
That night, after dinner, we stepped outside before returning to our rooms.
The stars were unlike anything we’d ever seen.
Living in the city, I’d forgotten the night sky could look like this.
Thousands upon thousands of stars stretched endlessly overhead.
Somewhere in the darkness, a hyena called.
Another answered.
Instead of feeling afraid, I felt incredibly small—in the best possible way.
The world suddenly seemed much bigger than deadlines, meetings, and daily routines.
The People Who Made It Special
Of course, the wildlife was unforgettable.
But so were the people.
Our guide’s knowledge transformed every game drive into a lesson about nature.
The lodge staff greeted us each morning like old friends.
Every smile felt genuine.
Every conversation felt unhurried.
Their warmth reminded me that hospitality is just as much a part of Kenya’s beauty as its landscapes.
Leaving Was Harder Than I Expected
On our final morning, I stood outside my room with a cup of coffee, watching the first light reach Mount Kilimanjaro one last time.
The elephants were already beginning another day.
Birds filled the air with song.
The bush carried on exactly as it had before we arrived.
Only we had changed.
As we packed our bags, one of my friends looked around and smiled.
“So… same time next year?”
We all laughed.
But none of us said no.
More Than Just a Safari
When people ask me about Amboseli, they usually expect me to talk about elephants.
And yes, the elephants are extraordinary.
They expect stories about lions, giraffes, zebras, and breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro.
Those memories are impossible to forget.
But what I remember most is something less tangible.
I remember laughing until tears rolled down our faces during the drive from Nairobi.
I remember sharing coffee while watching the sunrise over the plains.
I remember sitting quietly beside my three best friends, completely speechless as elephants walked across the golden savannah with Africa’s highest mountain standing proudly behind them.
Sometimes the best journeys aren’t just about where you go.
They’re about who you experience them with.
And for four friends searching for a little adventure, Amboseli gave us far more than a holiday.
It gave us stories we’ll be telling for the rest of our lives.
