Beautiful freshwater Lake Naivasha is surrounded by dense papyrus. Despite being about 13 km in width, the lake’s waters are only five meters deep on average.
The average range of the lake area, which is dependent on rainfall, is between 114 and 991 square kilometers. Naivasha dried up completely around the start of the 20th century and essentially vanished. The resultant open space was used for farming until the lake reappeared a few years later due to strong rains, engulfing the recently founded estates.
High waves and unexpected turbulence on the lake might result from afternoon wind and storms. Hence, the Maasai people in the area gave the lake the name Nai’posha, which translates to “rough water.”
